The analyses presented on this interface use 57 years (1948-2004) of daily maximum and minimum temperature data to show the variability in temperature deciles. A decile is created by dividing the distribution of individual values in a series into ten groups of equal frequency. For the present analysis, the distribution includes two years of daily temperatures sorted in ascending order. The deciles are created by separating the 730 possible daily temperatures into ten equal bins (note that Feb. 29 data from leap years are omitted). The first decile contains the 73 coldest temperatures for the two-year period (winter temperatures), and the last decile contains the 73 warmest temperatures for the period (summer temperatures). Deciles are calculated for 2-year running periods with one year of overlap (e.g., 1948-49, 1949-50,…,2003-04). The graphics display contours of daily temperatures from coldest to warmest with the decile limits shown on the x-axis (e.g., the region from 0 to 1 shows the 73 coldest values, the first decile). The time on the y-axis represents the first year of the 2-year running period. The mean temperature for each of the 2-year periods is shown as a red line on the plots..
